fsarchiver deleted the whole filesystem

Post by sohelmk » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:20 pm

I am not sure if this is a bug or as designed, but would like to know the root cause and how to avoid this in future:
I was running fsarchiver for live backup of partition. I had to kill the process because i did not had much disk space and fsarchiver started taking lot of disk space. After killing it I found space was not freed. Then I found that in tmp there was a folder (something like /tmp/fsa..) showing huge space. So I did "rm -rf /tmp/fsa.....and suddenly found everything getting destroyed on the system. By the time I switched off the machine, damage was almost done and whole partition was erased.

I guess fsarchiver creates soft links in tmp directory....and when I did rm -rf..it started deleting all files.....

Is this normal? How to avoid this in future? What is the best way to kill fsarchiver and delete temporary files?

Thanks,
Sohel

/tmp/fsa.. is a mount point of your partition.
fsarchiver temporary mounts a partition to backup.
So I did "rm -rf /tmp/fsa..
You have removed files yourself.

killall fsarchiver

umount /tmp/fsa*

Interesting way to delete your root filesystem ;)

But why does fsarchiver mount a partition *writeable* that it tries to save? The partition should be mounted *read-only*. Was it writeable because the TS was trying to save a parition that was already mounted?
