Can't write archive file on DVD

Post by Ron_ » Wed Dec 16, 2009 1:57 pm

I am trying to use FSArchiver to copy a single directory to a series of blank DVDs. The directory was created by one of my periodic full backups using SimpleBackup. I use the following command:

sudo fsarchiver -z 1 -s 4600 savedir /dev/sr0:2009-12-15_xxxxxxx_ful.fsa 2009-12-15_xxxxxxx.ful

FSArchiver does a bit of work, then responds....

archive.c#369,archive_write_data(): write(size=262232) returned 100055
archive.c#381,archive_write_data(): Can't write to the archive file. Space on device is 0 bytes.
If the archive is being written on a FAT file system, you may have reached
the maximum filesize that it can handle (in general 2GB)
create.c#206,creatir_obj_regfile_unique(): operation has been interrupted
removing /dev/sr0:2009-12-15_xxxxxxx_ful.fsa

Is this the right approach?

As a followup.... I was successful using this fsarchiver command to copy this subdirectory (containing a single full backup from SimpleBackup) to a temporary directory on disk rather than to DVD. It segmented the SimpleBackup subdirectory into 4.5GB files that I suppose I can burn directly to DVD using Nautilus or Brasero.

fsarchiver cannot burn files directly to a DVD disc. You have to save the file to the disk first. Your archive file (after savedir) has to be a normal file on the disk.

Okay, I understand that. But I am getting errors even when copying to disk. First, I ran "sudo fsarchiver savedir -z 1 -s 4300 ..." to disk destination /FSArchiver_temp. This produced 2 files: .fsa and .fs1.

I then burned 2 DVDs using Ubuntu 9.10's CD/DVD Creator. This is my first time, so I think that it created a "normal" file, but it might be an image file.

When I tried to restore, I got:

xxx:~$ sudo fsarchiver restdir /media/cdrom0/2009-12-15_ful.fsa FSArchiver_temp
[errno=0, Success]: thread_archio.c#481,read_and_copy_block(): cannot read block (finalsize=135651) failed
extract.c#742,extractar_restore_obj_regfile_unique(): queue_dequeue_block()=-5=QERR_ENDOFQUEUE for file(2009-12-15_09.55.21.631600.RL.ful/flist) failed
extract.c#939,extractar_extract_read_objects(): queue_check_next_item() failed: cannot read object from archive
extract.c#1449,do_extract(): extract_read_objects(FSArchiver_temp) failed

Do I need to copy both DVD's back to disk before trying restdir? Can you tell me how to do that? (Drag and drop fails.)

When do you have that error, is that at the very beginning, middle or the end of the volume you want to restore ?

Can you run with more verbose to see what's wrong ? (add -vvv on the command line)

Are you sure your cdrom media is readable ?

As far as I can tell, the problem is near the beginning. When I try to cp from DVD to disk, I get only 1.9MB of the 4.3GB file. (On another DVD holding .f01, I get 448KB out of 1.2GB.)

Here is the verbose output from FSArchiver.

[email protected]:~$ sudo fsarchiver -vvv restdir /media/cdrom0/2009-12-15_ful.fsa FSArchiver_temp
-[00][DIR ] 2009-12-15_09.55.21.631600.RL.ful
-[00][REGFILE ] 2009-12-15_09.55.21.631600.RL.ful/fprops
-[00][REGFILE ] 2009-12-15_09.55.21.631600.RL.ful/flist
[errno=0, Success]: thread_archio.c#481,read_and_copy_block(): cannot read block (finalsize=135651) failed
thread_archio.c#729,thread_reader_fct(): read_and_copy_blocks() failed
extract.c#742,extractar_restore_obj_regfile_unique(): queue_dequeue_block()=-5=QERR_ENDOFQUEUE for file(2009-12-15_09.55.21.631600.RL.ful/flist) failed
extract.c#939,extractar_extract_read_objects(): queue_check_next_item() failed: cannot read object from archive
extract.c#1449,do_extract(): extract_read_objects(FSArchiver_temp) failed

I can't be sure that the media is readable. When I pop it into a WinXP machine, it is not recognized. I guess this might point to a problem with my media, my local hardware, or my drivers, but if the problem is not FSArchiver I would appreciate any advice you could offer to help me narrow it down.

So can you copy the archive file to the disk first, and then run restdir from it, and show me if you get the same output

Thanks for helping me in diagnosing this problem. Apparently, there is something else going on in Karmic that may be the whole explanation (or not.) In any case, I think that it needs to be solved before I bother you any more about FSArchiver. See http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthrea ... 809&page=2 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/405544 .

You are right, a bug in the CD/DVD burning software could explain the problem.
