Can't get it to work

Post by Finch » Fri May 01, 2009 8:01 pm

First of all I would like to say that I am a total novice with Linux: I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 1 week ago!!

Problem: I cannot make an archive of the Linux partition with Ubuntu 9.04 on it, I get the following error message: can't write to archive file: space on device is 1.00 Kb.

My setup:
Harddisk 1:
- 43 GB Ubuntu 9.04 on ext4 linux partition (/dev/sda5)
- 7 GB linux swap partition
Harddisk 2
- 90 GB ext4 data partition (/dev/sdb6)

I do the following:
I boot from the 1 May 2009 System Rescue CD and type:

mkdir /storage
mount -t ext4 -o rw /dev/sdb6 /storage
chown -R root:root /storage
chmod -R 755 /storage (also tried 777)
fsarchiver savefs /storage/test.fsa /dev/sda5

My goal is to make a backup of /dev/sda5 in /storage

Could someone please help me ????

What you are doing looks good. Can you check the disk space on /storage by typing "df -h" when it's mounted ?

Can you show the exact error message ?

When you have problems with fsarchiver, you can add option -vv (with one to multiple v) to have more details

Please, always say which version you are using when you report a problem.

You can also run "fsarchiver probe simple" to check which partition is what.

df -h gives this result:

I use fsarchiver version 0.5.2

fsarchiver probe simple gives:

Solved !

Thanks for asking the right questions: I had to resize the Storage partition for it to work, ie it was way to small (prolly mixed up my Mb's and Gb's !).

Merci bien.
