Mounting .fsa images as virtual disk

Post by alexpacio » Fri Aug 28, 2009 7:43 pm

Hi,
I tried fsarchiver, it's an extremely useful program (the only program with those features is only Acronis True Image) and it seems to work very well. But it still lacks of many important features. For example, can i mount the backup file generate as a virtual image to see the content?

Unfortunately it won't be possible to do that we the current file format. To have a mountable archive, the file format must be designed as a filesystem with inodes, blocks, ... with a direct access. fsarchiver files are more traditional archive read sequentially.

Writing such a filesystem is perfectly possible but it would take a huge amount of time, several years of development. What we need is something like squashfs: this is a filesystem, so it's mountable. it's not possible to mount it in read-write mode, it's just created in one go by mksquashfs. The developer has the space efficiency in mind so he did not include extra details with the files (no checksum, probably no xattr, ...).

So the ideal solution would be an improved version of squashfs that supports extra data to make it more reliable, such as the checksums and other attributes.

Ok...so, the only thing that i can do to mount the .fsa archive is to convert it in a squashfs based filesystem and to mount it in read-only mode...but, pratically, how can i do that? Which utility i have to use? Can you me an example for me?
I ask to you this because i want to recovery only a folder contained by the .fsa archive, without restoring the whole filesystem.
Any solution?

Thanks a lot for your support!

There is currently no way to convert an fsa archive to a squashfs, I just mean that to get mountable archives we should develop a brand new project which is a filesystem similar to squashfs with more attributes in the inode to protect against corruption.

It's technically quite easy to implement that but it's not yet available.
