Want to compare the archive to the original

Post by TimFreeman » Sun Jul 05, 2009 5:33 am

I have the practice of making my backup process compare the archive to the original, and once it caught a flakey memory chip that memtest86 couldn't find. I know it was a flakey memory chip because the problem went away when I replaced the memory chip. I had to use trial-and-error and the nightly backup procedure to discover which one to replace.

So I hope fsarchive eventually gets this feature. I suppose that's in the plan, since you mention elsewhere that you want to give fsarchive most of the features of tar, but I wanted to say that this one was particularly important.

If you restore the archive it will mentioned the corrupted files. Each file is saved with its md5sum in the archive so corruptions will be detected. Unfortunately you cannot just run an archive validation yet.
