fsarchiver and partimage data files

Post by gatorback » Wed Apr 08, 2009 6:37 pm

Francois has pointed out to me that I need to use fsarchiver to restore filesytems on larger / smaller disks. My images were saved using partimage. That being said, I think you know where I am going with this.

Is it possible to use fsarchiver and the partimage snapshots to restore data to a larger disk? If not, maybe possible to perform an operation on the partimage snapshot to change it to the fsarchiver format?

Any constructive comments are greatly appreciated!

Partimage and fsarchiver are two completely different tools.

Partimage is a static tool that copy used blocks of a partition, and it knows nothing about what there is in the blocks.

fsarchiver is a dynamic tool what copy the filesystem attributes (label, uuid, ...), the files contents, and files attributes (permissions, timestamps, xattr, ...)

So the only way to convert a partimage file to an fsarchiver file is to restore the partimage file and recreate the archive using fsarchiver.
