support for incremental and differential archives

Post by mbiebl » Mon Feb 08, 2010 2:30 pm

I'd like to see fsarchiver support incremental and differential backups, as e.g. rdiff [1] supports.
incremental means, you only store the difference between subsequent images. To restore the archive you'll need all images.
This is the most space efficient.
differential means, you only store the difference between the master image. To restore the archive you need two images: The master image+the one you want to restore. This is less space efficient but less prone to failures.

The current version has not been developed for incremental and differential archives. It's a major feature, so it won't be implemented in the short term. I am not sure we can do that with the current archive format. We probably need an index to store the list of files with their size/mtime to detect modifications.

Anyway I think it's possible to do, but it requires some time. I don't think it's a high priority, but I would like to work on that later.
