I use a 3ghz hyperthreaded processor.

Testing seems to indicate that it is better to use J1 (default) as opposed to J2.
J2 drives cpu very close to saturation with little/no speed increase.
Perhaps worth includion in a future wiki update that J should reflect only # cores ?

Yes you are right the -j option can have an unexpected impact. The speed depends on many things: CPU, disk, compression level, jobs, ... Also I am quite sure it would be possible to optimize performance by doing many tests and spending time on that, but I have to finish the "savept" stuff first and also I have to follow the priorities.
