Disaster Recovery Survey

Post by dgerman » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:26 pm

There are many reasons to do a backup, recovery from a file system problem is just one.
There are many stories about problems, this survey is an effort to collect actual experiences.
This is not a "Have you ever" poll, rather a poll on an individual events.
Only enter information for an event that occurred since January 2009 (last year).
If you had multiple full file system recoveries last year, please submit the poll multiple time.
If your experience involved other causes of system failure which require full file system recovery please let me know.
For this survey I am not concerned with mother board, power supply failures or other failures where the system was recovered WITHOUT recovering a file system.
Please select only 1 (one) cause.
Please select as many resolutions as the specific event involved.

Disk Failure
  • HD death (wont spin up
  • HD UnRecoverable errors
  • Disk structure loss (partition table or master boot record corruption by user with utility, erroneous installation, virus

Recovery Actions
What did you do to recover.
  • Install the OS and applications from distribution media (CD/DVD or download)
  • Recover from an image backup
  • Recover from a file system based backup

After collecting some preliminary data I will be preparing a more sophisticated survey.
If you know that this has been done by someone else, PLEASE let me know.

Thank you for your input.
