Archiving the boot sector, or maybe the entire drive?

Archiving the boot sector, or maybe the entire drive?

Post by binkleym » Thu Mar 18, 2010 9:31 pm

I ran fsarchive on a bootable USB key using the following command:

fsarchiver savefs mykey.fsa /dev/sdb1

And restore that archive to another key by:

fsarchiver restfs mykey.fsa id=0,dest=/dev/sdb1

However, the copied key doesn't boot. Does fsarchiver support copying the boot sector, or perhaps archiving the entire drive? Or do I have to install grub manually on each copied key? Thanks.

The current stable version (fsarchiver-0.6.8) only save the filesystem on that partition. The next version (currently available as 0.7.0-beta) can also save and restore the partition table.. Anyway you will have to reinstall grub by hand but this may be implemented in the future.
