Re: Errors during NTFS backup (HD might be faulty)

SystemRescueCd-1.6.0-beta002 comes with ntfs-3g-2010.5.22AC.6. This comes with bug fixes related to encryption. It may fix the problem, but I have not made other tests yet.

Re: archive of vista filesystem

fsarchiver version 0.6.1 is very old. A lot of bugs especially related to ntfs have been fixed in recent fsarchiver releases.
Please rerun it again from SystemRescueCd-1.5.6 (or the most recent SystemRescueCd-beta)

Re: archive of vista filesystem

According to your first post, you have just used the default compression level (equivalent to -z3 when not specified).
You should really check both fsarchiver and ntfs-3g versions:

Code: Select all

fsarchiver -V
ntfs-3g -V

Re: archive of vista filesystem

Are you sure you are not using a quite old fsarchiver version ? You should really use the latest one (0.6.10) when you work with Windows filesystems since it's more complicated and it has more bugs. You can get fsarchiver-0.6.10 on SystemRescueCd. If you are already using fsarchiver-0.6.10, it can b...

Re: Archive Restoration Speed

If you are restoring quite small filesystems to a large partition, creating a filesystem using static inodes (eg: ext3) can take a lot of time, so the overhead may be important. You can see how much time it takes when you sue restfs with the "-v" option. Inodes are created only when needed on other ...

Re: Archive Restoration Problems

You have to remote the extra space in your command: fsarchiver restfs /media/BUHDA/sda6-20100626.fst id=0,dest=/dev/sda6 "id=0,dest=/dev/sda6" means "restore filesystem number 0 in the archive to /dev/sda6" so the two things work together. Spaces are used to separate arguments, so if you want to res...

Re: Errors during NTFS backup (HD might be faulty)

1) So has the first error disappeared (input/output error) ? 2) "has been truncated": this error is supposed to happen when you backup a filesystem which is in use during the backup, but it can't be the case with your ntfs volume. I guess you are right, it must be a problem to handle encrypted file....

Re: Exit codes

In the current version (0.6.10) only 0 (success) or 1 (fail) can be returned. It has to be improved in the future. I also had the problem you mention (devices names that can change). You should use either LVM or devices entries in /dev/disk/by-label or /dev/disk/by-uuid since the name of the device ...

Re: Errors during NTFS backup (HD might be faulty)

The interesting error is "Input/outpout error". It can be due to either hard disk being faulty or file system corruption. I don't think it's a fsarchiver problem. You should download low level disk diagnostics utilities from the disk manufacturers website, and you should also run a "chkdsk /x /f c:"...

Re: My own little unscientific compression test

Yes I also maintain SystemRescueCd. So you have been using sys-fs/ntfs3g-2010.5.16 + fsarchiver-0.6.10.
It's good to have positive feed back based on recent versions of fsarchiver and sys-fs/ntfs3g.

Re: Windows backup LABEL unknown

It seems to be a SystemRescueCd question, what's the link with fsarchiver ? It sounds that the first mount command just worked even if you have a warning. Hence you cannot mount it twice You should fix your NTFS filesystem using either: 1) "ntfsfix /dev/sda1" under Linux (type "man ntfsfix" for help...

Re: My own little unscientific compression test

Thanks for having shared your experience about fsarchiver. I am happy to see that it works very well, especially on ntfs filesystems which had most bugs. Can you just say which Linux flavor and ntfs-3g version has been used during your tests ? Previous fsarchiver versions (< 0.6.10) had problems wit...

Re: Add command to verify an archive

Version 0.7.0 only has the savept/restpt stuff now. I will try to finish that and then I will focus on other features, but I first want to finish this. I have been very busy on stabilizing SystemRescueCd-1.5.x in the past few months, not sure when I will have time to make some progress on fsarchiver...
