Re: Single-thread hang on one file

You should run "fsarchiver savefs" with the most recent ntfs-3g to be sure you get all bug fixes. To analyse the situation you can mount the ntfs drive using ntfs-3g (with the same options as what "fsarchiver savefs -vvvv" says) and look at all files attributes (size, extended-attributes, ...) What ...

Re: Encrypt (-c): On what level does it work (granularity)?

Compression and encryption are implemented for data blocks level. So if one block is unreadable, it will be able to read the next data block. The checksum for the file(s) this block belongs to will show the file is corrupt. One single data block can be shared when there are many small files (REGFILE...

Re: I would like to enable LVM snapshots but I am not using

Installing all filesystems other than /boot on LVM is really a good idea, and it is even the default on Fedora / RHEL. Booting from LVM worked very well thanks the the initramfs which contains all userspace utilities such as LVM required to mount the root filesystem. And it allows to make consistent...

Re: save over network

I confirm fsarchiver does not support reading/writing the archive from/to stdin/stdout so you cannot use the pipe. To save your archive on a remote marchine you have to use either NFS or CIFS (or sshfs fuse).

Re: lstat error while archiving ext4 system?

The root cause is "Input/output error" which means fsarchiver gets this error when it asks the system to return file information. It can be either due to a corruption in the filesystem, or even an hardware error when attempting to read a block from the hard disk. You can run e2fsck to try to repair ...

Re: Error: wrong type of data in queue ...

I suspect your archive is just corrupt, and the corruption affects an header not a data block. That's why it does not show up as a checksum error. Can you reproduce this error if you do a savefs + restfs again ? Which fsarchiver version has been used to create the archive (you can use archinfo to ge...

Re: feature missing restfs: huge_file, dir_nlink, extra_isiz

The current fsarchiver version (0.6.13) is not aware of the ext4 features recently introduced. It will require a minor update to add support for these new features. Basically ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystems are based on three types of features that gives the flexibility to add more features to the same f...

Re: write backup to cd or network

1) z9 is the highest compression level. It is very slow and requires an huge amount of memory. You should not use it unless you really have a massive amount of memory. It is recommended to use -z8 or even -z7 if you want good compression and have normal hardware 2) fsarchiver does not support readin...

Re: Is it possible to restore a single file or a group of fi

There is no such feature yet, but you can extract the archive to a temp filesystem and you can use exclude to ignore most files to minimize the space and time required to restfs.

Re: restfs - error then crash

It sounds fsarchiver find an unexpected end of archive file. It sounds the archive has been truncated. Have you stored that image on a crappy filesystem such as FAT which has file size limitations, or have you copied the archive from one place to another using a corrupt media or flash device ? Can y...

Re: The way FSArchiver interpret wildcard: *

fsarchiver considers paths literally, it does not interpret things such as "~" or "$VARIABLES". Exclusions of your home directories such as --exclude="/home/john/.gvfs" should work, so keep in mind that you have to provide the path relative to the root of the filesystem. So if you have a separate pa...

Re: Format before restore needed?

You just need a partition to restore, the filesystem will be recreated by fsarchiver which means you do not have to run mkfs before you do a restfs

The xz compression library is the only LZMA implementation that has even been used in fsarchiver, so there is nothing to do about it.
