Re: Basic windows 7 backup-restore question

This code was in ntfs-3g version 2012.1. not included and fsarchiver works without problems. I think the point is that it doesn't work without problems, it just appears to work without problems; the ntfs-3g person says that previously it was silently making mistakes; this allows fsarchiver to back ...

Re: Basic windows 7 backup-restore question

I recommend looking at the links I posted above... the ntfs-3g author is happy to help with a fix, but we haven't heard from the fsarchiver author on this subject, so I'm not sure where things stand or if they will be fixed. Perhaps someone with kowledge can jump in and help with the issue. The ntfs...

Re: Errors when running fsarchiver

Out of curiosity, what leads you to believe that the developer knows about the issue or that a new version is on the way? The fsarchiver " status " page says ver .7 is being worked on and that ntfs support needs work. Also, I'm pretty sure the developer is aware of the questions/issues here even th...

Re: Errors when running fsarchiver

ii ntfs-3g 1:2012.1.15AR.1-1ub read/write NTFS driver for FUSE Yeah, if my shakey understanding of the chronology of ntfs-3g and files with multiple names (hard links) is right, that's old enough that ntfs-3g is ignoring the hard links or otherwise silently handling them in a manner that doesn't tr...

Re: Errors when running fsarchiver

hmmm, I've been using fsarchiver for win7 for a few years with zero errors? Statistics for filesystem 0 * files successfully processed:....regfiles=103943, directories=26465, symlinks=66, hardlinks=26538, specials=3 * files with errors:...............regfiles=0, directories=0, symlinks=0, hardlinks...

Re: Basic windows 7 backup-restore question

I'm late to the party, but in case anyone else finds this thread: fsarchiver, as far as i can ascertain, is definitely not functional for Win 7 or 8 operating system backups. I definitely would not use it for that. See: http://www.fsarchiver.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=4268#p4268 http://tuxera.com/fo...

Re: Errors when running fsarchiver

wow! followed your link and those pointed to from there too, it seems to be a one-year old issue, am I right? Any hope to have this fixed? Note that fsarchiver states that ntfs support is "unstable and incomplete", but those adjectives are not on the main page, only on the "cloning ntfs" page. The ...

See my conversation with the ntfs-3g guy here: (the ntfs-3g person said that he could assist anyone in developing a "workaround"):

Re: Errors when running fsarchiver

For the record, the ntfs-3g person said that he could advise someone in developing a "workaround" (I was not clear from his posts why a direct solution is not possible, but the technicalities are beyond me). Re: Errors when running fsarchiver

See http://www.fsarchiver.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1503 Looks like fsarchiver is broken for Windows 7 / 8 -- it does not appear to be able to handle any files that are "hard linked" on ntfs. This includes a lot of files in the WinSxS directory. I proposed a questionable fix (i am definitely n...

Re: 0.6.15 savefs ntfs - errno=31, Too many links

Ah, looks like this has been understood on the ntfs-3g side re: fsarchiver, as linked from another post in this forum: http://tuxera.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=36939&sid=919bf40be6c4f0073bef60c3b2f2920d#p36939 That, and subsequent posts, confirm that the later versions of ntfs-3g trigger fsarchiver t...

Re: 0.6.15 savefs ntfs - errno=31, Too many links

Might have figured it out... Still seeing this - fsarchiver 0.6.17 (running off a USB stick System Rescue CD) for a fresh Windows 8 install, ntfs-3g 2013.1.13. My ignorant-but-persistent research implies it's an fsarchiver bug where it tries to fetch the "dos name" (old-school 8-character name) of a...

Re: 0.6.15 savefs ntfs - errno=31, Too many links

Same thing here - Windows 8, fresh install, new disk (windows partition is on an SSD at /dev/sda1, bios partition table). Not sure which fsarchiver version, but installed (yesterday) from ubuntu repo. I boot to a separate ubuntu server 13.04 partition to do backups of /dev/sda. Works fine for other ...
