Re: Info on doing a bare metal restore using fsarchiver.

Just a quick question? Why not just backup the disk as a one step process? That would include the mbr, partitions, and everything for a true bare metal backup. The only issue is that it does take a bit more time and size if you don't clear the unused space. I maintain the g4l project that does this ...

Re: GPT partition support

Answer to my own question... Wasn't an issue with fsarchiver, but that I didn't have the EFI options set in the Kernels of my live CD, so it was only seeing the stub (?) partition. WIth the EFI options added to the kernel, the partitions now show up.

GPT partition support

Recently did an install of Fedora 16 on a disk that had been fully wiped, and noticed that it had setup the disk using GPT partitions in contrast to the older partition format. Noticed that the fsarchiver probe would only show the one partition, where cat /proc/partitions would show others. Wonderin...

fsarchiver probe output with a /dev/cciss disk?

I maintain the g4l project, and in the 0.38 version had used the fsarchiver probe option to get information on disk and partitions, and this works well. Just got a message that it isn't working with a /dev/cciss device. I don't have access to any system with a cciss disk, so don't know how fsarchive...

Re: Root Partition Backup

I maintain the G4L project, and it includes fsarchiver as well as other backup options. My classroom is setup to run it from the grub menu and loading from the files in the /boot partition. Put the kernel file and ramdisk.lzma file in the /boot directory and add the following lines to the grub.conf ...

Re: analysing filesystem takes a long time

Have you don't a ram test on the system? Whenever I've had issues with errors on compressed images, it has always been that the ram on either the sender or receiver machines fails the memtest program. Once had a brand new server that was failing on every image file created using it. Did a ramtest, a...

Re: analysing filesystem takes a long time

It does take some time to look at the files system, and it probable depends on the size of the file system, number of files, and how complex the structure is. I've generally used it on smaller partitions, and haven't noticed a big speed difference. You didn't mention what the filesystem is other tha...

Re: How to copy a debian system into a new computer using FS

I'm not familiar with debians format. I know that it supports ext formations and others to include lvm partitions that Fedora uses. If you are using the released version of fsarchiver, you would need to backup the partitions on the original system. On the new systems, you would have to build the par...

Re: Moving from old Harddisk to New-one

Generally making a disk image isn't a big issue, but one needs to know the details. If the disks are basically the same. Same Type of interface. Same # of sectors per track. Same # of heads. Then total size needs to be as large or larger than the original. What are the partitions on the disk. With a...

Info on doing a bare metal restore using fsarchiver.

I've been the maintainer for the g4l project for many years. It had partimage before I took over, but have recently added the fsarchiver as an options as well. I have not implemented all the options, but have it so it can do partition backups, and one can select compression options. I've also been a...
